There are people around the globe who have great love and concern for Planet Earth. This is why such folks are greatly troubled by the prospect of environmental degradation and ecological destruction. Environmentally conscious folks try to make a difference wherever they are, with a view to preserving the planet and its natural heritage.
One of the initiatives that are linked both to art as well as to the environment is known as Recycled Surfboard Art program. Surfers are quite passionate about their surfboards, as they are the medium of their contact with the vast and boundless oceans.
There are many surfers who have a heart and a mind inclined towards environmental issues. Their close contact with the sun, the surf and the sand is said to contribute to this eco-consciousness.
Jayme Noe is one such surfshop owner from Florida who makes art out of old and discarded surfboards. Old surfboards are generally dumped and just add to the ever increasing landfills. Noe got an idea from an artist friend of his, to recycle, paint and reuse old surfboards, thus giving shape to the ingenuous creative art for unique eco design.
Noe’s modus operandi is to collect old surfboards and give his customers some discount if they deposit their old surfboards with him. Noe then makes sure that the surfboards are refurbished, painted and made arty enough to adorn peoples’ houses as Tibi bars.
He has as many as four artists to paint surfboards in their uniquely distinct styles, with the proceeds of the business being used to pay for the materials and the artists. At the same time, he actively promotes this new and commendable form of art that has a strong ecological tilt to it.
There are thousands of surfboards that are discarded and dumped every year. It bears thinking that if the Recycled Surfboard Art program were able to reach out much farther, the era of surfboard wastage would be past.
