The meeting of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen was closed with an agreement by the countries committing to a significant reduction in emissions, and to raise funds to kickstart action in the developing world deal with climate change.
During the meeting, world leaders agreed supported by the majority of countries,
This agreement can not be all that everyone has hoped, but it is a fundamental principle.
The Copenhagen agreement recognizes the scientific view that an increase in global temperature within 2 degrees is necessary to avert the worst effects of climate change.
To achieve this objective, the Agreement provides that developed countries undertake to carry out, individually or jointly, quantified economy-wide emission targets after 2020,
A number of developing countries, including major emerging economies, has decided to report its efforts to limit emissions of greenhouse gases every two years, even a list of their voluntary commitments by 31 January 2010.
Nationally appropriate mitigation actions seeking international support should be recorded in a register the appropriate technology, finance and support the development of the ability of industrialized nations.
However, the leaders called for a review of this agreement, to be completed by 2015.
The review should include an examination of long-term goal to limit global average temperature increase of 1.5 degrees.
Heads of State and Government also intends to trigger timely action on mitigation, adaptation, finance, technology, reducing emissions from deforestation in developing countries for development and capacity building.
To this end, they intend to establish the Copenhagen Climate Green Fund to support immediate action on climate change. The collective commitment to the fund by developed countries over the next three years to approach 30 billion dollars.
For long-term funding, developed countries agreed to support a common goal of mobilizing $ 100 billion a year by 2020 to meet the needs of developing countries.
In order to accelerate action on the development and transfer of technology, governments intend to establish a mechanism for new technologies to accelerate the development and transfer to support action on adaptation and mitigation.
Climate change is the ongoing challenge of leadership in our time the challenge is now to transform what we reached in Copenhagen in something real.
The next conference on climate change will take place towards the end of 2010 in Mexico City.
