Nissan and the leaf battery aka a cheap but viable green car

Having a zero emission car is part of the green lifestyle we are all pursuing. Andy Palmer as the head of green vehicles of Nissan has the perfect answer for us. Since one of the most expensive parts of an electric car usage is the battery, Nissan has done something impressive with its LEAF’s battery. The price became more competitive as it costs only around £6.000 to produce, as quoted by The Times Online. With a low production cost, this battery pack is available in the market at around £9.000. It might be a high sum of money, but it’s definitely not if you compare it with other kinds of battery pack. This is main secret that allow Nissan to produce not only cheap green cars but also in a viable way.
The LEAF battery costs around $375 per kWh and this is much lower if compared with other EV lithium-ion batteries which could cost you up to $1.000 per kWh. While many people said that the LEAF battery is just only around 30% from the ordinary price of a same category of battery packs, there is also one competitor that is currently trying to reach the same level. The GM Volt battery pack that is produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors only costs around $500 per kWh. Specially made for their plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt electric car, this kind of battery pack is still costing slightly higher than the LEAF battery from Nissan even though their price is almost half cheaper than the other EV battery packs.
As the battery packs’ prices are going down, people will get more chances to afford electric powered green cars. But using an electric car has its own risks. You need to make sure that your battery pack is fully charged before you go traveling somewhere since you can’t charge it anywhere you want, especially when you are running on a long track of a highway.
