Lithium batteries are becoming the choice for hybrid and electric vehicles. But they are far from perfect: it will require a fee to recharge the battery after a mileage limit, of course there will be a degradation in time.

Contour Energy Systems, a self-described portable power has become a carbon nanotube technology Li-ion battery from MIT. According to Contour, the technology allows Li-Ion batteries produce up to a tenfold increase in power - in fact eliminate all concerns

Carbon nanotubes - sheets of pure carbon atoms rolled up into small pipes - "self assemble" into a structure that is closely linked porous nanoscale (billionths of a meter). "Carbon nanotubes contain many functional groups on their surface that can store a large number of lithium ions per unit mass," says Professor Shao-Horn of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering at MIT.

As a result, the battery will produce high-power in short bursts, as well as low power outputs for long periods of time. The batteries can provide 10 times more energy than conventional lithium ion batteries, and do not degrade over time. Carbon nanotubes are not yet produced in sufficient quantities for mass production of nanotubes containing Li-Ion batteries. But this could change once the Contour will be ready to market its battery
